Magnetic Actuation of Drops and Liquid Marbles Using a Deformable Paramagnetic Liquid Substrate
The magnetic actuation of deposited drops has mainly relied on volume forces exerted on the liquid to be transported, which is poorly efficient with conventional diamagnetic liquids such as water and oil, unless magnetosensitive particles are added. Herein, we describe a new and additive-free way to magnetically control the motion of discrete liquid entities. Our strategy consists of using a pa...
متن کاملCoalescence of Liquid Drops
When two drops of radius R touch, surface tension drives an initially singular motion which joins them into a bigger drop with smaller surface area. This motion is always viscously dominated at early times. We focus on the early-time behavior of the radius rm of the small bridge between the two drops. The flow is driven by a highly curved meniscus of length 2πrm and width ∆ ≪ rm around the brid...
متن کاملMagnetic control of Leidenfrost drops.
We show how a magnetic field can influence the motion of a paramagnetic drop made of liquid oxygen in a Leidenfrost state on solids at room temperature. It is demonstrated that the trajectory can be modified in both direction and velocity and that the results can be interpreted in terms of classical mechanics as long as the drop does not get too close to the magnet. We study the deviation and r...
متن کاملTrapping leidenfrost drops with crenelations.
Drops placed on very hot solids levitate on a cushion of their own vapor, as discovered by Leidenfrost. This confers to these drops a remarkable mobility, which makes problematic their control and manipulation. Here we show how crenelated surfaces can be used to increase the friction of Leidenfrost drops by a factor on the order of 100, making them decelerate and be trapped on centimetric dista...
متن کاملLiquid Drops sliding down an inclined plane
We investigate a one-dimensional model describing the motion of liquid drops sliding down an inclined plane (the so-called quasi-static approximation model). We prove existence and uniqueness of a solution and investigate its long time behavior for both homogeneous and inhomogeneous medium (i.e. constant and non-constant contact angle). We also obtain some homogenization results.
